Common Questions About Individual Therapy

Who Is therapy for?

Therapy is for anyone looking to grow in one or more areas of their life. Whether you have a specific problem like anxiety or you’re interested in personal development, therapy can be for you. For specifics on what therapy is and who therapy is and isn’t for, read my blog here.

Does Online Therapy Really Work?

Yes. I have found online therapy to work just as-well, if not better than, in-person therapy.

Many individuals are much more relaxed meeting in their environment of choice. They may feel safer disclosing personal information in the comfort of their own home. They also enjoy saving time and money not needing to commute to the therapist’s office.

They have much more flexibility in choosing a session time as all they need is a private location.

It can also give the therapist a chance to see your surroundings, which may sometimes impact the problem, but can be integrated into the treatment to help you.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with wanting to meet with a therapist in-person. If that’s the case for you, it means you and I are not a good fit, but someone else is. I recommend visiting a therapist’s personal website or contacting them for the most updated information.

I only offer online sessions (video & phone) at this time and have no plans to see clients in-person in the near future. My connection to my clients is just as genuine, warm, and direct as ever and our progress still depends solely on your personal goals and actions.

What is therapy like?

Depending on your needs, you and I will create an individualized plan that will help you address your current goals in therapy. As you learn new skills and have different experiences, your goals may change. This is a flexible plan over which you have complete control.

Therapy Goals

Goals can relate to specific problems such as:

Goals can also be related to improving general wellbeing and enhancing your life:

We will prioritize what’s important to you right now and come up with short and long term goals. Together, we will track progress towards those goals and troubleshoot any problems along the way.

This keeps us organized, on track, and helps you meet your needs while saving time and money. However, this plan can be changed or modified at any time. It’s up to you to let me know what is or isn’t working.

How long will I be in therapy?

Since these plans are individualized to fit your needs, it’s hard to say how long therapy will take or how many sessions you may need. But just to give you an idea, most of my clients need at least 3 months to adjust to treatment, learn a few new skills, and start implementing them in their lives. You may want to allow 6-12 months to notice significant changes in your life, thoughts, emotions, and relationships. (Please note: This is different for everyone and largely dependent on you and your unique circumstances. You may need more time, you may need less.)

Some people are surprised to learn that after they address their initial concerns, additional goals pop up that they want to work on. There’s nothing wrong with that or with you if that happens! Other people may prefer to take some time to practice what they learn, in which case we can pause, wrap-up, or spread out sessions. As long as you bring up your goals and/or concerns, we can address them together.
