HOW TO GET GOOD THERAPY

HOW TO GET GOOD THERAPY

Getting quality health care “should” be your right, unfortunately, in our current healthcare systems that can be challenging if not impossible at times.

A good place to start is by reflecting on your own needs. Answer the questions below and think about how important each one is to you. While it would be wonderful to get ALL your needs met, you might have to make some compromises (or spend a lot of time, energy, and money looking).

WHAT MAKES A GOOD THERAPIST?

WHAT MAKES A GOOD THERAPIST?

I wish all clients got quality care by all therapists in all types of treatment. Unfortunately, all therapy is not equal.

Let me preface this article by stating that there will never be one type of treatment or one therapist who is a good fit for everyone. We all have different needs, goals, personalities, experiences, and preferences.

However, it’s important to realize for yourself, as an individual, that just because you are meeting with a therapist, does not mean that you are receiving quality care or the type of treatment that will work best for you. It also doesn’t mean that there isn’t someone out there who can absolutely support you in just the way you need.

REASONS A THERAPIST CAN’T WORK WITH YOU, EVEN WHEN IT’S A GOOD FIT

Everything else being equal, having met all fit categories… a therapist may still not be able to work with you. I know, it sucks, but it’s true. It can get especially tricky around ethics. There are some hard lines that cannot be crossed, and others that are more challenging to navigate.

WHAT IS “FIT” IN THERAPY?

WHAT IS “FIT” IN THERAPY?

How do you pick a therapist? What does it mean to be a “good fit” in therapy?

If you’ve ever looked into therapy, you probably heard the term “fit,” but do you really know what it means? What I found in my NYC psychology practice is that there are actually four different types of fit in therapy and you can prioritize them based on your own needs.
